Season 8 Episode 3: Palestinian Chicken

Larry stands up for a cause he believes in.

This season is really going from strength to strength. Without the presence of any real season arc, these episode feel fresh and anarchic in a way that Curb hasn’t been in a while. If you compare some of the plot lines with the early seasons, some of these situations seem so much more absurd. But they are still as hilarious as ever. Meanwhile Larry’s character always seems to stay grounded in some kind of reality, in that we identify somehow with his often seemingly crazy behaviour.

Tonight’s episode is sure to have upset someone. It really shouldn’t though. One of it’s strengths is that is shows how farcical and absurd hate and prejudice can be, especially of another religion or ethnicity. Larry’s loyalty is not to a prejudice his friends “expect” him to have, his loyalty is to his penis. An admirable, and unwavering loyalty for my mind. It also seems that Larry has found a second calling after comedy, as a “social assassin”. I think it only right that he start reaping some rewards for his diligent work in pointing out the flaws and annoyances of those around.

Highlights:

“On the way we’ll pick up a new cock for you ok?”
Being turned on by someone who denies your right to exist. If you had any doubts, that sex scene would have been sure to allay them.
LOL.
“You’re taking the chicken!?”
Sammy’s all grown up (in more ways than one…) – “Now get the fuck out of my driveway you bald prick”
A new form of “dirty” talk (incredibly hot, and well voiced by Anne Bedian) – “You occupying fuck!” “”I’m an occupier, I’m an occupier!”
“The penis doesn’t care about race, creed and colour. The penis wants to get to his homeland.” – Honestly, this is as poignant an argument against prejudice as I’ve ever heard.
Susie describing the way Jeff eats as only Susie can, “shoving your fat fucking face”.

Season 8 Episode 1: The Divorce – reviewed

Larry learns that his divorce lawyer is not kosher; Larry cancels a Girl Scout cookie order.

Larry is back. And the master of the painful laugh has lost none of his penchant for the awkward moment. This is one of the stronger season premieres from memory. I can’t say I was in stitches for 30 minutes but there were some really funny moments, and classic curb situations. Spoilers follow:

Like previous seasons, this first episode is used to set up part of the scenario for a possible season arc. Larry gets divorced in this episode, so his relationship with Cheryl seems like it will remain “complicated” at best for the majority of the season. Marty Funkhouser is back and seems like he will be joining Larry on the newly single 60 year olds scene. Jeff, Susie and new favourite Leon all make their return. It really is like seeing old friends again. The episode also sees Larry lose the house to Cheryl, meaning he and Leon will be packing and heading to… New York? At some point anyhow. Apart from that, not a lot about a potential arc is revealed.

Larry and the rest look like they are really having fun this season and that’s a good sign. The banter between the characters is fresh and a joy to watch. I’m looking forward to the inclusion of guest stars including Michael J. Fox and Ricky Gervais.

My highlights:

“The delicious brown crumbly stuff… cinnamon.”
“And I can call you bald, it’s like black people calling each other (the n word). Hey baldy!”
“I’m taking your balls and I’m thumb tacking them to the wall” (yes, Susie is most certainly back )
The buffet situation that I have always thought about acted out in the surreal reality only Curb can provide.
Larry gently pushing a tampon into his armpit was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while.
“Good afternoon General Petraeus.”
“You are a colossal prick”
“Excuse me, do you have a scissor?”

Key lesson for this episode: “It’s not a negative thing to run an ass into the ground.”

Next week’s episode 2 is titled “The Safe house”.

Curb returns July 8

Mark your calendars. Clear your Sunday nights. Season 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm starts airing on July 10th. I will be blogging reviews for each episode just like I did for seasosn 6 and 7, and I hope we can get a lot of discussion going in the same vein as last season. Any other ideas for how we can enjoy the new season, please let me know.

Meanwhile check out the below video of Richard Lewis and J.B Smoove (Leon) chatting on the Hill-Man Morning Show. Last season I mentioned that I really wanted to see Richard and Leon in a scene together, and it seems others want to see it too. Unfortunately, Richard advises us that Larry is a “hog” so perhaps we won’t get to see that in season 8. The two do say that they think Larry should do 100 episodes (10 seasons) so I’m sure we will see the two of them in a Curb scene at some point. Even in this short interview they have good comic chemistry.

Season 7 Episode 10: Seinfeld

In the Season Seven finale, a returned favor costs Larry quality time with Cheryl.

So we come to the end of another season. This site is now almost two and a half years old and I’ve blogged reviews for the last two seasons of Curb. Time really does fly when you write about something you love. I’m not saying I’m in love with Larry. Having said that, I kinda am.

This episode was great. It probably wasn’t as strong as last weeks but it was above average for what was a great season. In terms of a finale, it’s not up there with season three’s “The Grand Opening”, but funnier than season four’s “Opening Night”. As a season, I really did enjoy number seven. More so than season 6. Is it up to the standards of two and three? Maybe not, but for my mind it really is the funniest thing on TV. Seeing Larry’s mind tick and the situations he gets into among his cast of nutjobs, whilst it may less often elicit that “rolling on the floor, side-splitting” kind of laughter, is always a delight.

I’ve really liked Jerry this season. He always does seem to be holding back the laughs, just like he did in Seinfeld but it never really hinders the humour. In fact when I see him grin, I can’t help but start to smile as well. He does have contagious kind of chuckle like that friend that we love to love laugh with. Really hope to see him back next season though I wouldn’t count on it. Him, Marty Funkhouser, Richard Lewis and Leon in a room boggle the mind with comic possibilities.

One of this episode’s highlights is watching Larry try to play George, a character based on him. A character that has had so much of Larry worked into him, but then made his own by Jason Alexander. The result is hysterical – “No! No! No!”. Was also great to see Susie have one last explosion at Larry. I loved how she motioned her hands like she was carrying a nice big log of wood.

George and Jerry’s exchanges in the coffee shop weren’t perfect. There was a bit of that self-consciousness that was really in the Seinfeld finale. I felt that with Kramer and Elaine as well. It was something that I felt they managed to avoid in last weeks “The Table Read”. Perhaps it was the added pressure of knowing that this will almost definitely be their last times in those characters?

Spoiler: So it seems Cheryl and Larry are back together. For a season 8, we’d all hope. I welcome it, I think the single Larry thing has lasted a good couple of seasons now and its worked well.

So has Larry changed? Has he learnt anything in his time without Cheryl?
