Season 7 Episode 10: Seinfeld
In the Season Seven finale, a returned favor costs Larry quality time with Cheryl.
So we come to the end of another season. This site is now almost two and a half years old and I’ve blogged reviews for the last two seasons of Curb. Time really does fly when you write about something you love. I’m not saying I’m in love with Larry. Having said that, I kinda am.
This episode was great. It probably wasn’t as strong as last weeks but it was above average for what was a great season. In terms of a finale, it’s not up there with season three’s “The Grand Opening”, but funnier than season four’s “Opening Night”. As a season, I really did enjoy number seven. More so than season 6. Is it up to the standards of two and three? Maybe not, but for my mind it really is the funniest thing on TV. Seeing Larry’s mind tick and the situations he gets into among his cast of nutjobs, whilst it may less often elicit that “rolling on the floor, side-splitting” kind of laughter, is always a delight.
I’ve really liked Jerry this season. He always does seem to be holding back the laughs, just like he did in Seinfeld but it never really hinders the humour. In fact when I see him grin, I can’t help but start to smile as well. He does have contagious kind of chuckle like that friend that we love to love laugh with. Really hope to see him back next season though I wouldn’t count on it. Him, Marty Funkhouser, Richard Lewis and Leon in a room boggle the mind with comic possibilities.
One of this episode’s highlights is watching Larry try to play George, a character based on him. A character that has had so much of Larry worked into him, but then made his own by Jason Alexander. The result is hysterical – “No! No! No!”. Was also great to see Susie have one last explosion at Larry. I loved how she motioned her hands like she was carrying a nice big log of wood.
George and Jerry’s exchanges in the coffee shop weren’t perfect. There was a bit of that self-consciousness that was really in the Seinfeld finale. I felt that with Kramer and Elaine as well. It was something that I felt they managed to avoid in last weeks “The Table Read”. Perhaps it was the added pressure of knowing that this will almost definitely be their last times in those characters?
Spoiler: So it seems Cheryl and Larry are back together. For a season 8, we’d all hope. I welcome it, I think the single Larry thing has lasted a good couple of seasons now and its worked well.
So has Larry changed? Has he learnt anything in his time without Cheryl?
You can guess what I’m betting on.
What did you think?
Highlights:
- “I’ll read it with dinner.”
- “And yet it’s all acting”
“Mostly.” - “I revere wood!”
- “E for effort!”
“F for favour!”
“C for coffee.” - Susie being Susie, “I respect wood so much that if I had a piece of wood in my hand right now, I’d beat the shit out of you with it okay! Get the fuck out of here alright!”
- “You’re busying me with your beans!”
- “So you discriminate against wood?”
- “I see you! Laughing and lying!” – reusing a classic Costanza line to great effect!
- “Nobody liked that second Darren”
- “George is getting upset!”
- “Strangers have a bad reputation.”
“A few bad strangers… have ruined it for the rest of us!” - “None of your business Elaine!”
Stay tuned guys, I’ll have a review of Whatever Works coming soon. Also as soon as DVD details surface I’ll be posting it here especially for those yet to see this season.
Let’s not wait another two years to talk again, I am committed to get the forum going for ongoing Larry and Curb discussion so please come back soon!
LD nice ending to an average season. I liked it but I think the whole Seinfeld thing really got in the way of what could have been a much better season.
good synopsis, thanks for setting the site up, Alex..It is fun, with a bit of crazyiness sometime.. Whatever Works played in my hometown for exactly four days..Really looking forward to DVD of that..
and just to be argumentative, I don’t think cheryl goes back to Larry – he is himself, again, (the coffee stain interrupting the nice kiss…) and she leaves again..
I loved Larry trying to play George, and loved “George is getting upset.” Also really like George getting along with Cheryl – seemed like a good match to me..Oh well..
No more HBO until next season!
I really enjoyed the whole series – ep 10 was excellent – I really didn’t expect the Reunion Special to actually get made but to befall some acrimonious breakdown involving all the cast members.
Larry rounded the series off nicely with falling back into his old ways…
Overall I enjoyed the episode alot. Jerry and Larry’s exchanges are master class and could make a TV show in themselves.
The romance plot has been annoying all season though, it’s just not funny, it feels contrived and very un-Larry-Davidish.
I was dissapointed with Elaine, why is she such a selfconcious bitch now. She was one of my favorite characters in Seinfeld, where she was more silly, impulsive/aggresive and girly in a charming way. Now she’s just a dragon.
The whole season to me is a bit under par. Especially compared to the last 2-3 increasingly brilliant seasons. The main plot arch got in the way of the comedy a bit too much this season.
An ideal season to me would be like season 6 where Larry is single and dating random women, hanging out causing havoc with his buddies Jeff, Leon and Jerry.
Brilliant end to a brilliant season. The mocha joe guy was a tad annoying but other than that an excellent episode.
Not a bad ending to a fairly decent season, def not the best. But I really did love the Seinfeld thing, and the reunion show was pretty funny. Let’s hope Larry keeps it going, I just think that might be it. But one or two more season with Cheryl and Larry back together would be nice.
Wow… some of you people are just a bunch of negative nancies. I thought this season was great and hilarious. While you’re all complaining about this or that and this supposed “average” season, nothing on television comes close to what Larry does with Curb. Yet you people still find things to complain about regarding the show. What a joke. This season has been excellent, genuine curb.
I must say, Funkhouser was one of my least favorite Curb characters. And now he’s my favorite. So many great Funkhouser moments/scenes I can’t even begin to list them all. The dirty joke he tells Jerry had me in fucking stitches. Too fucking funny.
The look on Cheryl’s face when Larry tells her he wants her to call Susie and tell her she’s the one who doesn’t respect wood was priceless. The kind of, “He hasn’t changed and probably never will but he’s my man.”, you know?
We are not complaining you poo face, we are all stating our opinions on the season. Thats all…
This season was prob only a 3 out of 5 due to prob only 5 or 6 of the eps been good with the rest been a bit below par. It had its funny parts, yes, but Larry usually nails every ep in a season with sometimes having 1 or so been below par.
If you are looking for good stuff to watch, try Sons of Anarchy. You’ll love it if you have a soul.
Thanks Alex for keeping up with this site. I appreciate it. I also agree that Curb is the funniest thing on TV and I hope Larry and crew will be back for season 8!
do not know why i have not been hired by Larry for “CURB”…I am fabulously hysterical…a typical Jewish ma who has always given guilt trips to her two sons: ,threatened to jump out of window if two sons married “shiksas” (they did) ( I am still here thinking of ways to break them up,perhaps a little extra something in my chicken soup when they come to shabat dinner…..) I am a gorgeous yiddisha maidel from the Grand Concourse , The Bronx, Ready for Auditions, when u are Larry……you can google me (SAG) on L.A. Actors etc. (Bought the book ,, ‘CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM” interesting but not as funny as i thought it would be. Keep the 30.00 in any event…maybe some day you will sign it over coffee , cream cheese and a New York bagel.(the Nova in L.A. sucks) Sheila Surkes Scotti HAPPY CHANUKAH
1 of the ONLY 2 solid episodes this season. kudos for ending on a good note, but what a bummer of a season. what made me a fan in the first place was the slow-paced, eerie — sometimes artsy — awkwardness predominantly in seasons 1-3. 4-6 were funny, but definitely dove into an “unrealistic situation” territory that carried a sit-com-like shadow.
i still believe HBO had its hand in the creative pool for season 7; all arguments were so forced and it was too celebrity-infested. i had never seen an episode of entourage but i feel like i’ve season one season’s worth of material (curb season 7).
i really hope he pulls the plug on the show and starts fresh with a new project.
just saw ‘Whatever Works’ latest Woody Allen starring LD..THE WORST woody allen movie ever..LD is good.. Just absolutely garbage movie..Woody and his old men and young girls..GACK..Not to speak of a ‘bum’ who is picked up off the street, and within a half hour has perfect clothes, figure, skin..SKIP this movie..’Funny People’ is way better..at least it is honest..
I love Curb your Enthusiasm, we keep HBO channel mainly because of this series, I like LD. I am wondering if this is the end for good or is it going to be more CYE? I hope there will be more, it’s been real fun to watch it. Good job.

Would like a copy of picture of Larry driving his car and the women in the front seat is turning around looking at the back of the automobile
