Season 7 Season 7 Season 7!

August 19th, 2009 Alex 2 comments

Larry recently unveiled the context behind the Seinfeld reunion that forms the story arc for the seventh season of Curb:

“The context is for years I’ve been asked about a ‘Seinfeld’ reunion — as has Jerry and the other cast members. I would say, ‘No, there’s no reunion, we would never do that, it’s a lame idea’ … but it might be really funny to do that on ‘Curb’ … and I kept thinking of how we could pull this off, and Jerry was game … so we’re doing a ‘Seinfeld’ reunion show.”

seinfeld-reunion

On returning to a Seinfeld “state of mind” Larry said “it was surprisingly smooth”, likening it to “getting on a bicycle”. He also hinted at a possible hour long season finale but wouldn’t give up whether or not fictional Larry would end up ruining the fictional reunion. That does sound like something his character would do and as Larry recently told ABCNews, “I don’t evolve. I don’t believe in character evolution.” What can we expect to actually see? Larry explains in this short video:

As for a possible season 8? Susie has assured us that real Larry hasn’t changed either:

“The most difficult part of doing the show is after every season we never know if Larry’s going to want to do another season or not. I don’t know if we’re doing a season eight, it’s all up to Larry. When he finishes a season, he feels like it’s exhausting and like he has no new ideas … but he always snaps out of it, so I’m hoping we’ll be back.”

HBO have been running several promos for the upcoming season. Thank God for YouTube, here they are (thank you to those who emailed and posted the links):

More interviews

Larry recently talked to John Jurgensen from the Wall Street Journal about Whatever Works. In comparing his and Woody’s comedy, he said:

I am not nearly as ambitious or as smart as he is. I’m dealing pretty much with what people have to deal with in their everyday lives. I don’t take on big things. What I do, pretty much, is make the big things small and the small things big. It’s a comedic device. That works for me.

Larry David, Evan Rachel Woody, Patrick Clarkson

Mali Elfman from Screencave also recently covered a press conference that Larry attended for the film with co-stars Evan Rachel Wood and Patricia Clarkson:

Did you hang our with a lot of Jewish people to prepare for the role?

Clarkson: I mean you never do that.

David: I’ve never done that. So, yes, that aspect was really unusual. I tried to find as many Jews as I could and be-friend them and talk to them and see what made them tick.

Clarkson: Didn’t you go back and you were bar mitzvah-ed again?

David: Oh, my God (laughing). I went back to Brooklyn and walked the streets and interviewed people, what’s it like being a Jew? How do you behave?

In other news, Meg Ryan has been confirmed as a guest star early in the upcoming seventh season of Curb.

Update: The Youtube video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by NBC Universal.  I have added the official NBC video to this page but it may only work for those in North America. Apologies, my hands are tied.

Larry talks to Conan on June 16 about his role in the upcoming Woody Allen film Whatever Works.  He also discusses his divorce, dental hygiene and orgasm regret.

Not as good as his Letterman interview but enjoyable nonetheless.

For one reason oranother I can’t seem to embed the second video so click here to view it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season Seven begins September 20

June 12th, 2009 Alex 2 comments

Curb cast member Jeff Garlin indicated on his Twitter account on the 2nd June that season 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm will premiere on HBO on the 20th September. Thanks to fellow fan Jim for spotting it, he has been invaluable in getting Larry related news on here FIRST! I apologise for having been a bit slack on keeping the blog up to date but promise to be on the ball in the run-up to the big night.

Scott Raab of Esquire recently had a “An Extremely Awkward Encounter with Larry David” over a bowl of soup. Among othe things the two find time to discuss the health of their necks, vegetables, hummus, and the Seinfeld curse.

SR: So Curb’s seventh season is coming up. You’re starring in a Woody Allen movie. You’re here in New York City. You walked the red carpet last night at the Tribeca Film Festival. How does it feel to be Larry David?

LD: A lot better than it used to, I can tell you that. Better than having to walk from First Avenue to the West Side because I couldn’t afford to get home at night. Having to eat Chef Boyardee, emptying the pennies in a grocery at three o’clock in the morning to buy Chef Boyardee — it’s better than that. I feel good.

For those wondering, I’ve already wiki’d it and Chef Boyardee is a brand of canned pasta.

Also of note, last month Mark Haris from New York Magazine did a excellent feature on Larry, Woody Allen and the evolution/future of Jewish humour. Whether you agree with its assertions or not, if you appreciate the humour of Larry and where it came from, this is a really interesting read.

Stay tuned, more to come!

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 7- a year and a bit away?

June 26th, 2008 Alex 44 comments

Jeff Garlin appeared at press junket for the new Pixar film WALL-E, in which he stars. Chud.com reports Jeff had to say this about a seventh season of Curb:

The earliest we would be on the air would be a year from now, and I’m guessing a year from this fall.

Let me just tell you what Curb Your Enthusiasm is like for me and Larry. We do all first drafts – there’s no rewriting, it’s all first drafts. When we get to the set, let’s say it’s a scene where Larry and I are driving somewhere, talking about something. They’ll say ‘Speed,’ meaning the sound and cameras are ready to go, and I’ll turn to Larry and say, ‘What’s this scene about?’ He’ll say ‘I don’t remember.’ We’ll call over the AD, who has a small version of the script, and we’ll look at it and say ‘Oh, okay.’ So I won’t know until I’m filming that day. I mean, I read the outlines in advance, but I forget them by the time we go into production.

MoviesOnline have a transcript of an interview with Jeff, though he doesn’t discuss Curb.

Jeff Garlin talks Season 7 of Curb

June 24th, 2008 Alex 1 comment

This will be very welcome news for a lot of fans. Jeff Garlin talked to Vern Glenn from KRON 4 in late March, yet somehow the interview has eluded all of the entertainment sites and even me for a couple months.

Here is the video in full:

Jeff can’t say when we can expect season 7, but he does confirm Larry is writing it! At the time of the interview Larry was working on the second episode and was about to fly to New York to start filming with Woody Allen. He’s since finished filming so let’s hope he has continued writing. More news will follow as I learn it, but I hope this confirmation brings a smile to a lot of the fans who have been commenting about how badly they want a seventh season.

A short post

January 31st, 2008 Alex 1 comment

The New York Times has an article about J. B. Smoove, who played the very popular Leon on season 6 of Curb. There’s no mention of him returning to Curb, but there is talk of Vivica A. Fox reprsising her role as Loretta Black. FreeTimes has a short interview with Susie Essman but its nothing we haven’t already heard.

Richard Lewis adds to season 7 hopes

November 18th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

A short interview about Richard Lewis from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review discussing his stand-up and Curb. He had this to say about a seventh season:

“I know how it ends, and I’m not quite sure from my point of view that Larry would end the season like this. Having spoken to Larry lately, he seems very energetic and very upbeat, which usually means that he’s come up with an arc for the next season.”

Mr. Media interviews Cheryl Hines

November 5th, 2007 Alex 4 comments

Mr. Media, Bob Andelman, who previously interviewed Jeff Garlin has an interview with Cheryl Hines on his website. You can listen to the mp3 or read the transcript, as she discusses at length her involvement in Curb and even hints that a possible seventh season is not out of the picture.

Also, on a side note, I think someone previously commented that Larry has commited to another three seasons of Curb. I have not read this anywhere and I have several Google alerts set up so as not to miss any news related to Curb or Larry. Anything I do miss is usually picked up by fellow fan Jim. So unless whoever posted that news has a source, I don’t really believe it. It would be very uncharacteristic of Larry to sign up for three seasons, and to my knowledge he is still unsure of a seventh.

Some light reading

November 5th, 2007 Alex No comments

I haven’t updated in a while. I’m currently taking final exams for this year so I’m using that as an excuse! I will be finished in just over a week though and will be making more regular posts. Here are some articles I’ve accumulated over the last week or two.

Larry David: Still full of enthusiasm for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ from The Canadian Press is a short little interview that is entertaining at the least. On doing another season Larry says,

“I had such a good time this year, I think I’d probably like to do it again,” he says. “My only issue is my face. I’ve got to edit this show and look at my face six to eight hours a day. Most people just look at their face when they’re looking in the mirror. I’ve got to see it all day long.”
Another year would be fun, except for “this big bald head,” he sighs, shaking it. “It’s big and it’s bald. I gotta take that into consideration, too.”

Melanie Chartoff, wrote on Jewlarious.com about how Taking on Larry’s life for a summer — along with his neighbor Kenny “Kramer” — made me appreciate my own.” This is a really interesting read about what Larry was like before his success with Seinfeld and also about the “real Kramer”.

The Palm Beach Post has an interview with Richard Lewis. He talks mostly about his stand-up career but does comment on how much he enjoys working with Larry on Curb:

“Larry’s a phenomenally gifted stand-up. No one knows that. He’s stormed offstage more times than he’s been on, if he didn’t get the audiences’ undivided attention,” Lewis says.

“‘You just ordered a scotch! How dare you!’ But (the show) is a dream come true. Everybody has something to complain about. But I really love what I’m doing. To be able to have done Carnegie Hall, all these specials, and Curb. It’s a gift.”

Finally, here is a very interesting read from Jacob Ward of The New Yorker detailing how psychiatrist David Roberts found Curb Your Enthusiasm to be “television’s purest expression of social dysfunction”. Roberts considers Larry David to be the perfect proxy for a schizophrenic person. When contacted about it Larry had this to say:

“It just deals with how you’re supposed to behave. A lot of the time, it’s just me expressing myself freely. I knew that my own mental health was problematic, but should I be worried? I mean, I blow up, too! Is this something undiagnosed? Do I need to see a clinical psychologist?”

A couple of interviews

October 17th, 2007 Alex No comments

On October 5th Larry talked to Steve Sommers on WFAN. You can listen to fairly lengthy interview on the site, or download it directly. Larry talks sports, as well as relaying his now famous story about quitting his job at Saturday Night Live, only to return the next Monday as if nothing had happened and how it became the basis for an episode of Seinfeld. An enjoyable half hour and special thanks to Phil for emailing me about this.

MSNBC has a Q&A with Susie Essman that I’m sure many of you will enjoy reading. She talks at length about Curb, incluidng her favourite episode:

My favorite Susie Greene episode is probably “The Doll.” My favorite phrase from that episode was, “Get me the f****** head.”

Classic. Susie really does hold claim to some of the best lines of the show, including this seasons zinger “revenge masturbatory payback”. Anyhow, an interesting read so enjoy!
