Season 7 Episode 7: The Black Swan

Larry twice encounters bad luck on the same golf hole.

Not a bad ep with some funny scenes and bits of dialogue. It saw the return of some Curb regulars including Richard Kind as Larry’s cousin Andy and Shelley Berman as Larry’s father. It was great seeing them back and Larry fall into those inane yet amusing family quarrels. The lunch scene was a classic. I guess you could say this episode is a little subdued compared to last week’s controversial show, though Larry does manage manage to commit “involuntary manslaughter” with a swan. Not much movement on the Seinfeld arc although Larry does mention that “next week” the read-through would take place.

Highlights:

  • The “unnecessary social convention of introductions”. Agreed, and frankly I don’t want to be introduced to everyone I happen to bump into. It’s just another name I’m now obliged to remember.
  • “Will you please finishing shoveling that shit into your face?” – One of Marty’s best lines to date!
  • “How’s your wife?”
    “Fuck you Norm!”
  • “You killed a swan”
    “Keep your fucking voice down!”
  • “Why did I order turkey?”
  • “They have non-acidic fruit, you got papaya, mango and banana!”
  • “So I’m hoisted by my own petard?”
  • Larry’s wasted cash in the fictional “shakedown” – “I don’t think he knew what the fuck you were talking about”.
  • “LARRY, an asshole and swan killer”

Definatley the worst ep so far. Wasn’t overly funny and rather stupid in parts. Larry is actually getting annoying with his constant bickering with everyone. In past seasons it worked and was funny, this season it’s just annoying. Maybe it’s the absence of Cheryl that makes him look like a sad old man, here’s hoping more Seinfeld arc in the last 3 eps.

I thought it was a good episode, strictly revolving around the story line, without unneeded, forced guest appearances. The jokes where all, related to the plot, he didn’t insert ideas or side stories, which are not relevant just to get another punch line.
As I said before, not having a female counterpart, indeed makes him look bitter than usual.
When unknown/ less known actors are used, the jokes seems more focused, and we get a good general feeling of reality and fluidity.
I liked seeing Jerry attending few scenes before, But he seemed to be there just to keep the arc going, not really incorporated, or getting a unique role as he should have.

thought it was good episode… nice to see his Dad and Andy in it – by far the best comedy around

    last 3 titles are:-

    “Ep 8; Office Krupke”
    “Ep 9; The Table Read”
    “Ep 10; Seinfeld”

I’d call this one a “vintage” episode. I liked the pace, the situations and the characters appearances. Those 4 guys in the table was very funny! And I’m glad there were no controversial situations, even more after the last one. Next episode will be great with the full Seinfeld gang on the set.

    Hi from Paris,
I think it was a cool episode, but can’t help being a litte bit disappointed by this season. I guess it is due to his break-up with Cheryl. In my opinion, he is funnier when he is in couple, she is a great counter-point to his character.
But I’m full of hope for the last episodes.

Good episode, loved it. Kinda glad to see the blacks gone, they were funny but time to move on from those characters. So far even with Cheryl in the background, I think this is another fine season. Larry being single is a great vehicle for more comedy. My only complaint so far is regarding the “Bare Midriff” ep (sorry comments closed on that ep here) is the whole napkin stealing bit was pretty dumb and could’ve been written better. Other than that another fine season so far.

Thanks for your comments guys, but please limit discussion to THIS week’s episode. There is a reason I closed comments on last week’s. Cheers.

ugh. wow. so boring. i had to force myself to smile. i don’t wanna say larry’s lost his touch, i wanna say somebody else has more control over the show and is making an imitation of Curb. take out the wheelchair episode, this season has been a complete failure and a massive letdown.

Great episode. Another great season. I cant believe theres only 3 episodes left. Now another 2 year wait if there even is another season. I know i shouldnt mention last weeks show but i just wanted to mention something i thought was kind of “interesting”. the white board behind Jerry’s head had several show ideas like “the doll” and “rage killing” .after the rage killing occurs in this episode the white board changes to “the doll” and “no shorts on plane”. anyway i hope “the bare midrift” doesnt end up like “the puerto rico day parade”episode of seinfeld. let me once again apologize for not following the rules.I guess i’ve been watching way too much curb.

another highlight from last night: (about Norm)
    ?-did you even know him?
Larry – I did know him somewhat.
? – did you like him at all?
Larry – No. I thought he was a prick

    great stuff

Pretty good Ep, was impressed. This season has been really (for lack of a better word) different. I wonder if we will see an 8th season? Look forward to the rest and NOT seeing the Seinfeld reunion go ahead, he will fuck it up somehow.

I loved the episode, c’mon people, we all know Larry does stuff we would love to but won’t. Like, yelling at slow golfers, being honest with friends and telling them they’re idiots. I love the Larry of this season.Where I golf there are lots of Canada geese, so I can relate. Killing the beloved swan, fuuunnyyy!

good episode, a little light..Loved the ‘Peter and the Wolf” music as the swan approaches..and LD’s efforts at seeming innocent to Mr. Takahashi..and ‘how’s your wife?” hee hee..

also shelly Berman at his wifes grave – “how long do we have to stand here” Shelley just gestures, ‘who knows..’ – really funny..Love Shelley Berman, since the sixties, with “Kafka on the Telephone”

Braydon are you kidding me? This ep was awesome funniest quote of the ep “you’ll keep your god damn mouth shut!”

Interesting how in past seasons many people complained about Cheryl Hines…not funny, boring, ruins the show, etc. Now that she is (nearly) gone, people are complaining about her absence and how the unchecked LD is worse without her.

This episode was very annoying and upsetting. No one has questioned or commented at the killing of the black swan? The way he picked up the swan by the neck means that the swan was dead. No one is upset at the fact that they really did kill a black swan to make this episode. That wasn’t a fake swan. The neck was smaller near the head which indicates that the swan neck was wrung in order to kill it. Since in the show he clubbed it there is no reason for the neck to look like it was wrung. If they made a fake swan they would not add the neck twist. Where is PETA? In England if you kill a swan it is treason against the Queen because she owns all the swans. That is a beautiful way to protect a beautiful, piece of God;s creation. I suppose I should say like everyone else “It’s just a bird! Who cares!” but I can’t since I was a child a swan to me was one of the most beautiful creatures God ever made. I don’t think God had any part in making this show. I thought it was illegal to harm animals in making a TV show or film? Where’s the outcry? I was very disappointed in this season. Losing Cheryl was probably a big part of it.

Yea, that was the last episode for me. Who in the right mind would kill a sentient being just to make an episode? If the bird would have looked fake it would have been funny. But this looked real and truly criminal!

It puts these people in a whole new light. Who would do something like this!

Agree about the swan. I was so excited to watch this show and with this episode I’m completely disappointed. Just sick.
