Seinfeld Season 8 DVD Release

May 30th, 2007 Alex No comments

In a few days the 8th and second-last season of what is felt by many to be the greatest sitcom and TV show of all time will be released on DVD. Fans of Seinfeld and Larry David alike will be aware that this was the first season without the input of the comedic master. On his departure Seinfeld entered its era of the completely absurd. Whilst for some it represented a dip in quality, there is no denying the hilarity of the show especially when compared with anything since (except Curb of course!).

Whilst I haven’t seen this episodes for a couple of years at least my picks for season 8 would be (not in any order):

  1. The Bizarro Jerry
  2. The Chicken Roaster
  3. The Abstinence
  4. The Yada Yada
  5. The Muffin Tops

The usual extras accompany the release including commentaries by cast, deleted scenes and the always stomach-clenchingly hilarious blooper reels.

Larry David in 1977

May 29th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

Yesterday I came across this black and white Youtube clip of Larry talking to a friend filming him way back in 1977, a time when he was blessed with a much “fuller” head of hair to say the least. He doesn’t say a lot in the 45 second clip but one can make out some humorous remarks about striking women. Just like the Larry of more recent times, he never was one to shy away from the politically incorrect. Enjoy.

Cheryl Hines writing new sitcom pilot

May 28th, 2007 Alex No comments

Rob ReinerThat’s right, Cheryl Hines, TV wife of Larry David is penning a new sitcom pilot based on her time as Rob Reiner’s personal assistant. This is the first I’ve heard of Cheryl writing for TV but well let’s face it, if she’s picked up anything from her time with Larry it would be how to write comedy. Those unfaimiliar with Rob Reiner, he’s the director of such films as When Harry Met Sally and This is Spinal Tap among others. He also appeared as himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm Season two’s The Thong episode as a fellow patient of Larry’s shrink, where he encouraged Larry to raise money for Groat’s syndrome.

Hannah Montana clip

May 22nd, 2007 Alex 3 comments

Here it is, the previously mentioned appearance of Larry with his daughter’s on Hanna Montana. This one and a half minute clip is all I’ve seen of this Disney show but I’m pretty confident in saying it is a pile of crap. Larry is actually quite funny. His daughters aren’t too bad either. Enjoy!

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Soundtrack

May 18th, 2007 Alex No comments

In June last year Mellowdrama Records released the official Curb Your Enthusiasm soundtrack. From the moment you hear the inital brass notes of Luciano Michelini’s Frolic, you are instantly immersed in the fictional universe of Larry David’s hit TV show. Larry has commented in interviews about the song’s ability to make any situation funny no matter how horrible. The other tracks are all also instantly recognisable and actually quite enjoyable pieces of music. My personal favourite is The Puzzle by Franco Micalizzi, a track I like to play on my mp3 player while I visually interrogate people with my vicious Larry David squint.

You can purchase the CD, listen to tracks and read other reviews on the Amazon website.

New Interviews Section

May 18th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

I’ve gathered up links to all the major text, radio and video interviews of Larry available online on a separate interviews page. I will be continually updating this list, hopefully with more detailed information/comments of my own.In other news, Curb fans can expect to see Kaitlin Olson return in her role as Cheryl’s sister Becky in season 6, slated to start in September. See the Willamette Week Online article, Postcard from Hollywood.

A couple of videos

May 14th, 2007 Alex No comments

I haven’t added any new content for a couple days, but rest assured I am working on some stuff.

Here is a video that appeared about a month ago on StopGlobalWarming.org The first one had me wishing my grandfather’s hair loss was hereditary. Larry convinced me that as a man with a full head of hair I am a terrible human being although he seemed to have less luck with Cheryl Hines. I’m sure you’ll feel the same way:

The End of Curb?

May 11th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

As I’ve previously posted, Cheryl Hines has indicated that Larry feels that Season 6 of Curb Your Enthusiasm will be it’s last. However, she also indicated that Larry has said that at the end of every season since season one.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that was pretty certain that season 5 would be the final one after watching the season finale, “The End”. In fact, I was quite satisfied with that episode being the end to one of my favourite television shows of all time. After suffering the whole ordeal of almost death, it was a brilliant, typical Larry David conclusion. Just like in Seinfeld, the character hadn’t evolved, they hadn’t changed for the better. After the potentially life-changing experience of saving the life of his best friend and visiting guardian angels Sascha Baron Cohen and Dustin Hoffman in Heaven, he returned to the deliciously neurotic and unabashedly obstinate self we have all come to love and admire (well I know I have). “Well then you wait. You wait.” This really was as good an ending as fans could have asked for.

I, like many others I’m sure, am all too familiar with brilliant shows running overlong and becoming a shadow of their former selves. Shows that peak and descend, often rapidly, known as “jumping the shark”. Although they may remain funny and popular, they are sad to watch as one remembers what they used to be (the current season of Scrubs springs immediately to mind).

But one thing we have to remember is that this is Larry David. This is the guy who left what is often acknowledged as the best TV show of all time at its peak. He left Seinfeld at its most popular and importantly, most profitable. He doesn’t need the money. He didn’t do Curb for the money. Like he told Ricky Gervais in their interview, he does it because his mother always said, “You’ve got to get out of the house”. If there’s anyone that we can trust to end a series at its best, it is Larry David. I say bring on Season 6.

In Larry we trust.

Larry to guest star in “Hannah Montana”

May 10th, 2007 Alex No comments

Today the New York Post reported that Larry will be featuring in an upcoming episode of Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel. Larry’s two daughters Cazzie (12), and Romy (10) are big fans of the children’s show about “an average teenage girl at school during the day and a famous pop singer, Hannah Montana, at night, concealing her real identity from the public other than her close friends and her family” ((http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_Montana_(TV_series) )).

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Book

May 8th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

In October 2006, Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Book by Deirdre Dolan was released by Gotham Books. You can purchase the book and read customer reviews on Amazon.

Penguin Group (USA) describes the book on its website:

CYE THe Book

What are the secrets behind the creation of Larry David’s hit show? Fans can finally find out with this long-awaited companion guide to the Golden Globe- and Emmy® Award- winning series.
Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Book is complete with stories about Larry David’s childhood, his roots as a stand-up comic, and his various writing jobs before the breakthrough of Seinfeld. Readers will enjoy dating stories from his bachelor years, discover how he met his future wife, Laurie David, and learn why Cheryl Hines was picked to play his TV wife. A highlighted map of Santa Monica shows locations where favorite Curb scenes were filmed, such as the Toyota of Hollywood where Larry works as a car salesman. Ever wonder if there’s a story behind the creation of Krazee-Eyez Killa’s infamous rap? There is, and it’s in this book, along with the tale of the ordinary afternoon lunch where the idea for Curb Your Enthusiasm was first formed. Perhaps best of all, fans can finally see Larry David’s original scene outlines – just a few sentences from which the actors improvise-which eventually evolve into the carefully edited comedy that we see on air.

“The Roving Thoughts of a Liberal Insomniac”

May 7th, 2007 Alex No comments

Fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm will most likely know that Larry David has fairly liberal politics. His wife is prominent environmentalist, Laurie David. His politics have been the subject of jokes in CYE. In the season 4 finale Larry finally gets the chance to cash in on his 10th anniversary present and sleep with Cady Huffman only to find out she is a Republican and has a photo George W. Bush in her dressing room. Upon hearing of this Jeff yelled, “Who gives a fuck? I’d fuck her with a Bush mask on!”

Ricky Gervais Meets… Larry David

May 7th, 2007 Alex No comments

Ricky Gervais is the British comedian most famous for BBC comedy series, The Office. It was a huge success in Britain and around the world and it truly is some hilarious television. Being a big Ricky Gervais fan, I was very excited about him interviewing my favourite comedic genius. The interview is excellent and by far my favourite of all that Larry’s done. “Interview” isn’t really the correct term to use as it is more like two friends talking. Although they hadn’t previously met the two are always on the same wavelength and it really is a joy to watch them make each other laugh and talk about humour, television and everything in between. There is information on the UK Channel4 website, as well as on Ricky Gervais’ official site. For those familiar with BitTorrent, you can find the whole interview using a major search engine. Someone has also generously uploaded the complete interview in different parts to the YouTube website.

Interview from Seinfeld days

May 7th, 2007 Alex 1 comment

Larry David is known for his dislike of interviews. Over the years he has done a few of them, and this is one of my favourites. Kenny Kramer, Larry’s inspiration for the Kramer character on Seinfeld has an interview on his website that Larry did for the Laugh Factory magazine around 1994 during the success of Seinfeld.
